Introduction

How boring would life be if we didn't  have any obstacles or challenges to overcome, to test our mettle and spur us on to victory?  Pretty boring, right?  We admire and even revere people who have overcome all odds to succeed.  Just look at some of the oldest and greatest myths, fairy tales and legends in the world.  They all portray some variation of the hero's (heroine's) journey.  You know how the story goes.......An initial loss, disaster or other calamity results in a mission which the hero/heroine must accomplish.  He/she sets out on the path and encounters adversaries and perilous trials/tribulations, as well as helpers, guides and lucky breaks, along the way.  He/she faces the opponent courageously and overcomes him/her/them to learn the secret or reclaim the treasure or win back the damsel in distress, etc.  He/she is often injured in the process but learns many valuable lessons as he/she gains what was sought.  He/she sets out on the path back home and sometimes has to shake off further pursuers and challenges.  When the hero/heroine finally arrives back home there is a huge celebration in his/her honor and often a wedding and accession to the throne.

This story is a metaphor for our journey through life!  It is my belief that there is some benevolent source in the universe that wants us to triumph over our inner limitations and succeed in our life journey otherwise there would be more failures, deaths, and defeats in the myths, fairy tales and legends.  If we lived in a malevolent world we would all value those things we despise - treachery, deceit, revenge, hatred, greed, anger, fear, etc.  Having love for others, courage, honor and integrity would make us feel bad, right?  Sadly though, many, many people (especially with physically or emotionally abusive upbringings) are too easily overwhelmed by the supposed "adversaries and perilous trials and tribulations" of life.  Feeling discouraged, disheartened and cut off from the "helpers, guides and lucky breaks" these people feel ALL ALONE IN THE WORLD and try to fill the painful emptiness with any number of addictive habits and behaviors (see Feelings Buried Alive Never Die in the Self-Healing section for more on this).  A person's Enneagram type will best describe how and why he or she feels cut off and empty inside.  I know because I felt empty and alone most of my life until I started to pay attention to the "helpers, guides and lucky breaks" that were just waiting for me to take advantage of them all along.

Everyone has insecurities, fears and doubts of one kind or another as well as personality weaknesses and shortcomings.  This section will link you to other parts of my web site that will focus on these issues.  It is my sincere hope that this section will help give you greater self-awareness and confidence to triumph over any inner fears and doubts you might have and become the hero or heroine of your own life story!
