"Vata, Pitta and Kapha are called the three supports. Knowing this group of three as the sacred threefold mantra OM, the wise are liberated." - Brihat Yogi Yajnavalkya Smriti II.25
Dosha Type Test Results
The 3 doshas - Vata, Pitta and Kapha - are the factors that produce the physical body and are responsible for its constitution, substance and function. Vata relates to the element air, Pitta relates to the element fire, and Kapha relates to the element water. Our tissues are mostly kapha (watery), our digestive system is mostly pitta (fire) and our nervous system is mostly vata (air or wind). One of the three doshas predominates in each individual and becomes the basic determinate of his or her mind-body type (the way one looks, thinks and behaves) but no one is of one type purely. No type is better or worse than another. As with all types in any system, each has its strengths as well as its weaknesses.
Ayurveda, a science of self-healing aimed a relieving the diseases of the body and mind, distinguishes people as vata types, pitta types or kapha types. A person's bodily structure, emotional responses and habit of mind are to a great extent determined from his/her dosha type. Many books on ayurveda go into great detail about the functioning of the doshas and can be consulted for more information. Here I am giving just a brief introduction to the three doshas for a basic understanding.
