The DISC System Self-Assessment

This self-assessment will help you determine your DISC behavioral style. If you are curious what the DISC system can do for you then go to the Self-Awareness Self-Assessments Overview page. Also, you might want to read: BEWARE OF THE DANGERS OF SELF-ASSESSMENTS.

Directions: Study the four descriptive words in each of the 28 boxes below while thinking about how you behave and feel in most situations. Everyone can display a full range of feelings and behavioral characteristics, depending on the situation, but everyone has a preferred way of behaving that characterizes their behavioral style. Choose one Most and one Least description in each of the following 28 groups of words (click on the Radio button button to select the description. If you want to unselect it, click on it again). Start by saying to yourself something like, "In most situations, when I'm just being myself, I tend to be Most....... and Least........"

For example, you might say, "In most situations, when I'm just being myself, I tend to be Most easy-going and Least authoritative" as shown in the example box below. Remember, select only ONE Most and ONE Least choice for each group of 4 descriptive words.

Scoring
Step 1. Go through your answers above and, using the 4 tables below, click in the box on all the "MOST" descriptive words you chose and then all the "LEAST" descriptive words you chose. This will help you determine your DISC raw score for each of the 4 DISC dimensions, D, I, S and C. The beauty of doing this yourself is that you'll be able to see which descriptive words on the self-assessment pertain to each of the 4 dimensions, and you'll be able to see how many "MOST" and "LEAST" descriptive words you chose in each dimension.

There is a pattern to this to make it easier for you. In question #1, the first descriptive word (easy-going) is an "S" descriptive word (see Table 1). The second descriptive word (precise) is a "C" descriptive word (see Table 2). The third descriptive word (jovial) is an "I" descriptive word (See Table 3). The fourth descriptive word (authoritative) is a "D" descriptive word (see Table 4). So, the pattern is an S descriptive word, followed by a C descriptive word, followed by an I descriptive word, followed by a D descriptive word - S, C, I, D. For question #2, the pattern is D, S, C, I. For question #3, the pattern is I, D, S, C. For question #4, the pattern is C, I, D, S. For questions 5-28 this whole pattern just repeats itself (Question #5 has the same pattern as Question #1, Question #6 has the same pattern as Question #2, etc.).

This is your raw score for D, Dominance. Make note of it. It does not mean anything until plotted on the graph below.

Step 2. Plot your raw scores on the DISC Behavioral Style Graph below to determine your DISC behavioral style. You can print this graph by clicking here and do it by hand, if you prefer.
To plot your D raw score, click in the check box next to your score, under the big letter D.
To plot your I raw score, click in the check box next to your score, under the big letter I.
To plot your S raw score, click in the check box next to your score, under the big letter S.
To plot your C raw score, click in the check box next to your score, under the big letter C.

For example, let's say someone named Jane has DISC raw scores of D = - 5, I = +9, S = +7, and C = - 5. She would find the score of - 5 under the letter D and click in the check box there. Next, she would find the score of +9 under the letter I and click in the check box there. The same would be done for the score of +7 under the letter S and the score of -5 under the letter C.

Step 3. Find potential behavioral traits of your personality based on your intensity index.

The Intensity Index can be found in the left-most column on the graph (the numbers 1-28). Once you have plotted your 4 DISC raw scores on the graph, look to see which intensity number each of your 4 plotted points falls under. Using Jane as an example again, her raw score of -5 for D has an intensity number of 16. Click on the following link to see a table of descriptors for each of the Intensity Index numbers: Table of Descriptors for Each of the 4 Dimensions, D, I, S and C.

Step 4. Type in your category score in the row that says "Category Numbers."

The Category Numbers can be found in the right-most column on the graph (the numbers 1-7). Once you have plotted your 4 DISC raw scores on the graph, look to see which category number each of your 4 plotted points falls under. Type your category numbers in at the bottom of the graph (where it says "Category Numbers") under each of your plotted points (D, I, S, and C). Click here to see an example.

Step 5. Find your Behavioral Style Pattern.

Click on the following link to find out which of the 16 different behavioral style patterns you have based on your category score: Category Scores and their Associated Behavioral Style Pattern.

Step 6. Read about your Behavioral Style Pattern.

Read a description of your Behavioral Style by clicking the appropriate link in the table below. Other than the single letter in parentheses, the 2 letters in parentheses indicate the primary and secondary styles of a person. For example, the Mobilizer primarily uses the Dominance style and secondarily uses the Influence style. By contrast, the Persuader uses the Influence style primarily and the Dominance style secondarily.
